Looking for an Optometrist Near Parramatta? Why Patients Choose Auburn Instead

DTDr Zobaida Tahiri·March 2026·5 min read

Parramatta CBD has several optometrists. Most are located inside Westfield or on Church Street, and most are franchises of national optical chains. If that works for you, that is fine. But a growing number of Parramatta residents are making the 10-minute drive to Auburn to access independent, clinically focused eye care at Prime Optometrists, and there are some clear reasons why.

Independent vs Chain: What the Difference Means for You

Optical chains are retail businesses that also offer optometry services. Their revenue model depends substantially on frame and lens sales. This does not mean they give bad clinical care, but it does mean the clinical and retail functions are intertwined in a way they are not at an independent practice.

At an independent clinic, there are no monthly frame sales targets, no wholesale agreements that favour one brand over another, and no pressure to upsell lens coatings you may not need. The appointment exists to assess your eye health and provide the right optical correction. That is the whole purpose of the visit.

Therapeutic Endorsement: Why It Matters

Not all optometrists in Australia hold the same qualifications. Dr Zobaida Tahiri holds a Master of Clinical Optometry from UNSW and is therapeutically endorsed, meaning she can prescribe and administer therapeutic eye drops, manage ocular infections, and treat anterior segment disease beyond the scope of a standard optometrist.

For patients who present with red eye, persistent irritation, dry eye disease, or conditions requiring medication rather than just a prescription change, this matters considerably. Rather than referring you immediately to a GP or ophthalmologist, Dr Tahiri can assess, diagnose, and treat many conditions directly at the consultation.

Advanced Technology

We use OCT imaging for retinal and optic nerve assessment. This is the same technology used in hospital ophthalmology departments, and it can detect glaucoma and macular degeneration years before you notice any symptoms. Not every chain optometrist includes OCT as a standard part of the examination.
