Dry Eye Syndrome: Causes, Symptoms and Modern Treatments

DTDr Zobaida Tahiri·February 2025·4 min read

Dry eye syndrome affects an estimated 1 in 5 Australians, and it's becoming more common every year, largely driven by increased screen use, air conditioning, and aging. It's one of the most frequently seen conditions at Prime Optometrists Auburn, and the good news is that modern treatment options are highly effective.

What Is Dry Eye Syndrome?

Dry eye is a chronic condition in which the eyes don't produce enough tears, or produce tears of insufficient quality to keep the ocular surface healthy and comfortable. There are two main types:

  • Aqueous-deficient dry eye: The lacrimal glands don't produce enough tear volume
  • Evaporative dry eye: Tears evaporate too quickly, usually due to meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD), by far the most common type

Most cases involve both types simultaneously, which is why a proper diagnosis using advanced diagnostic equipment, like the tear film analysis we perform at our dry eye clinic in Auburn, is essential before starting treatment.

Common Symptoms of Dry Eye

  • Gritty, scratchy, or burning sensation
  • Redness and irritation
  • Blurred vision that fluctuates through the day
  • Paradoxical watery eyes (reflex tearing)
  • Sensitivity to light or wind
  • Difficulty wearing contact lenses
  • Eye fatigue when using screens

What Causes Dry Eye?

Screen Time

When we concentrate on screens, we blink up to 60% less frequently than normal. This dramatically increases tear evaporation. If you spend most of your working day on a computer, common in Parramatta's CBD workforce and remote workers across Western Sydney, this is likely contributing to your symptoms.

Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD)

Tiny oil glands along the eyelid margins (meibomian glands) produce the oily outer layer of your tear film that prevents evaporation. When these glands become blocked or stop functioning properly, the tear film becomes unstable. MGD is the leading cause of dry eye and can be assessed using our specialised diagnostic equipment.

Other Contributing Factors

  • Aging (particularly post-menopausal women)
  • Air conditioning and low humidity environments
  • Contact lens wear
  • Certain medications (antihistamines, antidepressants, blood pressure meds)
  • Autoimmune conditions (Sjögren's syndrome, rheumatoid arthritis)
  • Previous LASIK or eye surgery

Evidence-Based Treatments We Offer

At our dry eye clinic in Auburn, we develop a personalised treatment plan based on a comprehensive assessment of your tear film, meibomian gland health, and ocular surface. Treatment options include:

Prescription Eye Drops

As a therapeutically endorsed optometrist, Dr Tahiri can prescribe anti-inflammatory eye drops (such as cyclosporine or lifitegrast) for moderate-to-severe dry eye, something standard optometrists cannot do.

Meibomian Gland Expression

Professional, in-clinic expression of blocked meibomian glands to restore normal oil secretion. Often combined with warm compresses for ongoing home management.

High-Quality Lubricating Eye Drops

Not all eye drops are equal. We guide patients toward the most effective preservative-free lubricants matched to their specific dry eye type, avoiding products that can actually worsen symptoms over time.

Omega-3 Supplementation

Strong clinical evidence supports high-dose omega-3 fatty acids (re-esterified triglyceride form) for improving meibomian gland function and reducing dry eye symptoms.

Blephasteam / Moist Heat Therapy

Regulated, moist heat delivered to the eyelids to liquefy hardened meibum in the glands, significantly improving gland function when performed regularly.

“Dry eye is a chronic condition, not just a temporary irritation. Getting the right diagnosis and treatment plan early prevents long-term damage to the ocular surface.”
, Dr Zobaida Tahiri, Optometrist Auburn

When Should You See an Optometrist for Dry Eye?

If you've been using over-the-counter eye drops for more than a few weeks without significant improvement, it's time for a proper assessment. Untreated dry eye can cause lasting damage to the corneal surface and significantly impact quality of life.
