What Are FL-41 Glasses
Not just rose-tinted. Precision-filtered.
FL-41 is a rose-amber tint developed to filter a specific band of light, the 480 to 520nm blue-green range, that has been identified as the primary wavelength responsible for activating migraine-related light sensitivity pathways in the eye.
A specialised population of retinal cells, intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells (ipRGCs), contain the photopigment melanopsin and are maximally sensitive to light in this exact wavelength range. In migraine sufferers, this pathway is believed to be sensitised or hyperactivated, meaning that even ordinary levels of blue-green light can trigger or intensify an attack.
FL-41 is distinct from generic blue-light glasses, which filter wavelengths below 450nm associated with screen flicker and circadian disruption. It is also distinct from dark sunglasses, which can paradoxically worsen photophobia over time.

The Research
What the clinical evidence shows
Randomised Controlled Trial: Migraine Frequency
Patients wearing FL-41 tinted lenses experienced a significant reduction in migraine frequency compared to those wearing a control grey tint. The study identified the blue-green spectral range as the primary activating wavelength for migraine-related photophobia.
Photoreceptor Sensitivity Research
A narrow-band green wavelength around 530nm was the most tolerable light for migraine sufferers during an attack, further validating the FL-41 approach of filtering the surrounding blue-green band while allowing some mid-spectrum light through.
FL-41 glasses are not a cure for migraine and are not a substitute for medical advice. Results vary between individuals. Please consult your healthcare provider for comprehensive migraine management.

490nm is filtered by FL-41
This blue-green wavelength range activates melanopsin-containing retinal cells that are hyperreactive in migraine sufferers. FL-41 selectively blocks this band to reduce phototransduction through migraine pain pathways.
FL-41 lenses filter the 480 to 520nm band while allowing the rest of the visible spectrum through.
Who Benefits
Is FL-41 right for you?
FL-41 glasses are not appropriate for every patient, but they can offer meaningful benefit for a range of conditions where light sensitivity is a primary complaint.
Migraine Sufferers
Light is one of the most common migraine triggers. FL-41 glasses are clinically studied to filter the blue-green wavelengths that activate sensitised pain pathways during and between migraine attacks, particularly in environments with fluorescent lighting or screen glare.
Chronic Daily Headache
Patients with persistent headaches that have a photophobic component may find that reducing ambient blue-green light load helps lower headache frequency. FL-41 is worn during work hours or in high-fluorescent environments.
Post-Concussion Light Sensitivity
Light sensitivity is one of the most common and persistent symptoms after mild traumatic brain injury. FL-41 lenses are increasingly used as part of post-concussion visual rehabilitation, providing a filtered visual environment while the brain recovers.
Blepharospasm
Involuntary eyelid spasm is frequently associated with light sensitivity. Research has shown that FL-41 tinted lenses can reduce blink frequency and spasm severity in blepharospasm patients by reducing the light input that triggers the reflex.
Screen-Related Migraine Triggers
For patients whose migraines are consistently triggered by prolonged screen use, FL-41 glasses for computer work may reduce the cumulative blue-green light exposure that contributes to triggering an attack. They are distinct from standard blue-light glasses.
General Photophobia
Whether your light sensitivity is associated with medication side effects, autoimmune conditions, or is idiopathic in nature, FL-41 filtering can reduce the discomfort of light exposure in everyday indoor environments.

FAQ
Common questions
What are FL-41 migraine glasses?
FL-41 migraine glasses are spectacles fitted with a precision rose-amber tint that filters the 480 to 520nm blue-green wavelengths of light. This specific wavelength range is known to activate the light-sensitive pathways that are hyperactivated in migraine sufferers. FL-41 lenses are distinct from generic blue-light glasses and have been the subject of peer-reviewed clinical research.
Do migraine glasses actually work?
Clinical research published in the journal Cephalalgia, conducted at the University of Birmingham, found that patients wearing FL-41 tinted lenses experienced a significant reduction in migraine frequency compared to those wearing a control grey tint. FL-41 glasses are not a cure for migraine, but they are a clinically studied tool for managing light-triggered migraine and photophobia. Results vary between individuals.
Can I get FL-41 glasses with my prescription?
Yes. At Prime Optometrists we offer FL-41 lenses in prescription (including single vision and available lens indices 1.50, 1.60, and 1.67) and non-prescription formats. Glasses are typically ready within 1–5 business days from order.
Do you deliver migraine glasses across Australia?
Yes. We deliver FL-41 migraine glasses to all states and territories in Australia via Australia Post. Glasses are ready within 1–5 business days from order. Standard delivery takes a further 1–5 business days. Express delivery is available at checkout.
Are FL-41 glasses better than sunglasses for migraines?
FL-41 glasses are designed for indoor use in environments with fluorescent lighting, screens, or artificial lighting. Dark sunglasses worn indoors can paradoxically worsen photophobia over time by further sensitising the visual system through dark adaptation. FL-41 lenses reduce the specific wavelength that triggers light sensitivity without making the environment excessively dark.
What conditions benefit from FL-41 glasses?
FL-41 glasses are clinically studied for migraine and photophobia. They may also benefit patients with chronic daily headache, blepharospasm, post-concussion light sensitivity, and those with light sensitivity from other causes. They are increasingly used as part of post-concussion visual rehabilitation.
Are FL-41 glasses safe to wear?
FL-41 glasses are safe optical lenses. They are not a therapeutic device but precision-tinted spectacles. As with any tinted lens, they are not suitable for driving at night. If you have a medical condition, please also consult your treating physician regarding your overall management.
Why do I get a headache behind my eyes?
Headaches felt behind the eyes are often linked to how the visual system processes light, focus, and strain. When the eyes are working harder than usual or are sensitive to certain wavelengths of light, the surrounding muscles and visual pathways can contribute to that deep, aching pressure. At Prime Optometrists, migraine and light sensitivity is a core focus of what we do. We carry one of the most comprehensive ranges of migraine glasses available in Australia, backed by a large patient base with migraine, and our optometrist personally reviews every order. Visit our online shop or come into our Auburn clinic.
Why does light make my headache worse?
Light sensitivity during a headache, known as photophobia, occurs because specific wavelengths of light can overstimulate visual pathways and intensify pain. This is especially common in migraine sufferers, whose visual system can be more reactive to light even between attacks. Tinted lenses designed for migraine, such as FL-41, are precision-calibrated to filter the wavelengths most associated with this response. At Prime Optometrists, we carry a comprehensive range of these lenses, available online with personal clinical review on every order. Visit our shop to find the right option for you.
Why do I get a headache after being in bright light?
Bright environments, particularly those with harsh sunlight or intense artificial lighting, can overwhelm the visual system in people who are light-sensitive, triggering or worsening a headache. The specific wavelengths present in bright light are known to activate pain pathways in migraine sufferers more readily than in others. Wearing the right lenses can make a meaningful difference in how you feel in bright conditions. At Prime Optometrists, migraine glasses are one of our key areas of focus and we carry a comprehensive selection to suit different needs. Shop online or visit us in Auburn, where our optometrist reviews every case personally.
Can screen time cause migraines?
Screens emit light within wavelength ranges and at intensities that can place significant demand on the visual system. Prolonged use is a recognised trigger for headaches and migraines in some people, with the combination of near-focus work and blue-green light emission accumulating over a workday. A lens solution provides more consistent relief than screen settings alone for many patients. At Prime Optometrists, we have extensive experience helping patients with screen-related light sensitivity and migraine. We carry a large range of migraine lens options and our online service is easy to use, with every order personally reviewed by our optometrist.
Why do fluorescent lights trigger my migraine?
Fluorescent lights emit a disproportionate amount of blue-green wavelengths and flicker at a rate that, while often invisible, can affect the visual system and trigger migraines in sensitive individuals. This makes office and commercial environments particularly challenging for migraine sufferers. FL-41 tinted lenses are specifically designed to filter the problematic wavelengths emitted by fluorescent sources. We stock these and many other migraine lens options at Prime Optometrists, with one of the most comprehensive ranges available in Australia. Shop online or visit our Auburn clinic, with every order reviewed personally by our optometrist.
Why do I get a headache when I go outside in the sun?
Sunlight covers a broad spectrum of wavelengths at high intensity, and for people with light sensitivity this can quickly become uncomfortable and trigger a headache or migraine. Glare from reflective surfaces adds further stress on an already sensitised visual system. Standard sunglasses help with overall brightness but may not address the specific wavelengths that trigger migraines, making migraine-specific tinted lenses a better option for many people. At Prime Optometrists, we carry a comprehensive range of migraine glasses with our optometrist personally reviewing every order. Shop with us online or visit our Auburn clinic.
Can eye strain cause migraines?
Eye strain from prolonged visual tasks, uncorrected vision, or harsh lighting can place ongoing demand on the visual system and contribute to headaches. In people who are prone to migraines, this added strain can lower the threshold for triggering an attack. At Prime Optometrists, addressing the visual component of migraine is something we focus on heavily. We have a large patient base dealing with migraine and light sensitivity and carry one of the most comprehensive migraine lens ranges available in Australia. Our online service includes personal clinical review on every order, making it easy to get expert help from wherever you are.
Why do I get a migraine when driving at night?
Night driving exposes the visual system to high-contrast lighting conditions, including oncoming headlights against a dark background. For people sensitive to light, this kind of intense, shifting light can be a strong migraine trigger. Reducing the overall light load on a sensitised visual system through the right daytime and indoor lenses can help lower headache frequency over time. At Prime Optometrists, we work with many patients with this exact issue. Our migraine lens range is one of the most comprehensive available in Australia, and our optometrist personally reviews every order. Shop online or visit us in Auburn.
Why does my head hurt after looking at my phone?
Phone screens emit bright, blue-dominant light and are typically held close to the face, placing significant demand on the visual system. For migraine sufferers, even relatively short periods of screen use can be enough to trigger a headache, particularly in environments that are already visually demanding. A lens solution provides more consistent relief than screen settings alone for many people. At Prime Optometrists, we specialise in migraine and light sensitivity. We carry a large range of suitable lenses and our online service allows you to order from anywhere in Australia, with every order personally reviewed by our optometrist.
Can a vision problem cause chronic headaches?
An uncorrected or poorly corrected prescription can place ongoing strain on the visual system and may contribute to frequent headaches. When your eyes are constantly compensating to see clearly, the associated tension and fatigue can build into a recurring pattern of discomfort. Getting an up-to-date eye assessment is a sensible first step if you experience regular headaches. At Prime Optometrists, we also have particular expertise in migraine and visual sensitivity, carrying a comprehensive range of migraine-specific lenses available online. Our optometrist personally reviews every case to ensure the right outcome.
Why do I get headaches every day?
Daily headaches can have a range of causes and it is always a good idea to speak with a healthcare professional if they are persistent. From an eye health perspective, factors such as light sensitivity, uncorrected vision, and prolonged screen exposure can all contribute to how frequently headaches occur. At Prime Optometrists, we have helped a large number of patients manage the visual component of their headaches through the right lens solutions. Migraine glasses are a major focus of what we do and we carry one of the most comprehensive ranges available in Australia. Our optometrist personally reviews every case, online or in-store.
Can glasses fix migraines?
Glasses are not a cure for migraines, but for many people the right lenses make a meaningful difference to symptom frequency and intensity. Migraine-specific tinted lenses work by filtering the wavelengths of light most associated with triggering attacks, reducing the load on sensitised visual pathways in everyday environments. At Prime Optometrists, migraine glasses are a major focus of what we do. We carry one of the most comprehensive migraine lens ranges in Australia, built from years of experience with a large patient base. Our optometrist personally reviews every order and we offer a full online service to patients across Australia.
