There is no minimum age mandated by Australian optometric guidelines for contact lens wear in children. The decision is clinical, individual, and based on an assessment of the child's maturity, motivation, and hygiene capabilities, not simply their age. In practice, many children between 10–14 are excellent contact lens candidates and do extremely well with appropriate guidance and parental involvement.
Why Myopia Control May Make the Decision Earlier
For children with progressing myopia, MiSight 1-day contact lenses and orthokeratology are among the most effective myopia control options available. These treatments sometimes make the case for contact lens wear in children as young as 8–10, particularly when the clinical benefit of slowing myopia progression is significant. In these cases, Dr Tahiri conducts a detailed readiness assessment before proceeding.
Assessing Readiness,What Dr Tahiri Looks For
- Motivation: Is the child themselves motivated, or is this primarily a parent's decision? Self-motivated children care for their lenses more consistently and have fewer complications.
- Hygiene habits: Do they wash their hands before meals, brush their teeth consistently, shower regularly? Good general hygiene correlates well with contact lens compliance.
- Independence: Can they manage tasks independently? Lens insertion and removal requires fine motor skills and self-direction.
- Ocular suitability: Is the prescription manageable in the available lens parameters? Is there any dry eye or ocular surface condition that would complicate lens wear?
- Parental support: Will a parent supervise and support the lens routine at home, at least initially?
Daily Disposable Lenses for Children
When contact lenses are appropriate for children, daily disposable lenses are almost always the recommendation. The elimination of cleaning, storage, and solution management removes the main compliance risks. Each day is a fresh start with a sterile lens. The compliance risk that exists with monthly lenses, overwearing, poor cleaning, case contamination,is largely absent.
