The Silverwater industrial estate, Lidcombe warehouses, Clyde distribution centres, and Auburn light industrial area collectively employ tens of thousands of warehouse and logistics workers in Western Sydney. For these workers, eye health intersects with both occupational safety and licensing requirements in ways that many don't fully understand.

Vision Demands of Warehouse Work

Warehouse work involves a pattern of visual demand that is fatiguing and underappreciated:

  • Constant near-to-far switching: Reading labels up close, scanning barcode readers, checking pick lists, then looking across a large warehouse floor, this constant accommodation change is tiring for the visual system
  • Poor and variable lighting: Large warehouse spaces often have uneven lighting, bright zones near skylights, dark areas between racking. The visual system must constantly adapt.
  • Screen exposure: Handheld scanners, forklift displays, and computer workstations add digital eye strain to an already demanding visual environment
  • Dust exposure: Cardboard dust, packaging materials, and general warehouse particulate cause chronic low-grade ocular surface irritation

Forklift Licence Vision Requirements (NSW)

To hold a forklift (LF) licence in NSW, workers must meet minimum vision standards. These are assessed as part of the licensing medical. Key requirements include: visual acuity of at least 6/12 in the better eye (corrected if necessary), adequate binocular vision, and sufficient visual field. Workers who fail to meet these standards with their current correction,or who have uncorrected vision problems, cannot lawfully operate a forklift.

Many workers don't know their vision no longer meets the standard. Regular eye tests identify declining vision before it becomes a licensing or safety issue.

What We Recommend for Warehouse Workers

  • Annual eye examination, bulk billed with Medicare
  • Assessment for occupational progressive lenses if you need near and distance correction
  • Anti-fatigue or occupational lenses for workers spending hours at scanners and screens
  • Prescription safety glasses for workers in pick-and-pack, goods inward, or any area with fork traffic
