Tablets at breakfast. Phones at lunch. Homework on a laptop in the evening. For most children in Auburn, Parramatta, and across Western Sydney, this is daily life. As a parent, it's natural to wonder what all this screen time is doing to your child's eyes. The answer is nuanced, but the evidence is increasingly clear.

Does Screen Time Cause Myopia?

The short answer is: not directly, but it contributes significantly. The key driver of myopia is sustained near work combined with reduced time outdoors. Screens are a major source of near work in modern childhood, and a child on a tablet indoors is missing both factors that protect against myopia: distance vision and natural bright light.

Research consistently shows that children who spend more time outdoors, regardless of screen habits at other times, develop myopia at lower rates. The current target recommended by researchers is at least 90 minutes outdoors daily.

What Screens Actually Do to Children's Eyes

  • Reduced blink rate — we blink up to 60% less when looking at screens, leading to dry and irritated eyes
  • Ciliary muscle fatigue — the muscle that focuses the eye for near work becomes fatigued with sustained screen use, causing blurred vision and headaches
  • Accommodative spasm — the eye temporarily loses the ability to relax to distance vision, a condition sometimes called “pseudo-myopia”
  • Disrupted sleep — blue light from screens at night suppresses melatonin and impacts sleep quality, which affects overall development including eye health

Practical Tips for Parents

  • 20-20-20 rule: Every 20 minutes of screen time, look at something 20 feet (6 metres) away for 20 seconds
  • Set screens at eye level or slightly below, at arm's length distance
  • No screens for 1 hour before bed
  • Encourage outdoor play every day, even if it's only 30–45 minutes each session
  • Use Night Shift / warm colour modes in the evening
  • Annual eye tests to catch any developing prescription changes early

When to Book an Eye Test

If your child complains of headaches during or after screen use, squints to see the board at school, or you notice any eye rubbing or blinking, book a children's eye test. Early detection of myopia allows early myopia control treatment, which is significantly more effective the sooner it starts.

At Prime Optometrists Auburn, children's eye tests are bulk billed under Medicare. We are at 43 Auburn Road, Auburn NSW 2144. Book online or call (02) 9761 0005.
