Pterygium (pronounced ter-IJ-ee-um) is a wedge-shaped growth of fleshy tissue that develops on the conjunctiva, the clear membrane covering the white of the eye,and grows toward, and sometimes over, the cornea. It is directly associated with chronic UV radiation and wind exposure, and it is particularly prevalent in outdoor workers, tradies, and anyone who spends significant time outside in Australian conditions without proper eye protection.
Why Western Sydney Has High Rates of Pterygium
Western Sydney's combination of high UV index, large outdoor workforce (construction, landscaping, transport, market workers), and a multicultural population with historical patterns of outdoor work creates one of the highest-risk environments for pterygium in Australia. At Prime Optometrists Auburn, we see pterygium frequently,in young construction workers, middle-aged tradespeople, and older patients who spent their working years outdoors.
Symptoms and Stages
- Early: A small pink or red fleshy growth at the nasal side of the eye (nearest the nose). Often no visual symptoms. Some patients notice redness and irritation.
- Moderate: Growth extends toward the cornea. May cause astigmatism as it distorts the corneal surface. Increasing redness and irritation, particularly in dry or windy conditions.
- Advanced: Encroachment onto the central cornea. Visual impairment due to obstruction or significant induced astigmatism. Referral to ophthalmology for surgical removal is typically recommended at this stage.
Treatment
Dr Tahiri monitors pterygium progression at Prime Optometrists Auburn. Management includes lubricating drops for comfort, anti-inflammatory drops for acute flare-ups, and UV protection advice to slow progression. When pterygium reaches the point of visual impairment or becomes cosmetically distressing, surgical referral to an ophthalmologist is arranged.
Prevention
- Wear wraparound UV400 sunglasses whenever outdoors, standard glasses allow UV to enter from the sides
- A wide-brim hat reduces UV from above
- For outdoor workers: prescription safety glasses with UV filtering provide protection without removing your corrective lenses
