Finding an Optometrist in the Cumberland Council Area for an Eye Health Test

DTDr Zobaida Tahiri·March 2026·5 min read

The Cumberland Council local government area covers a large and densely populated part of Western Sydney, stretching from Auburn and Berala in the east through Granville, Merrylands, Guildford, and Chester Hill to Greystanes and Wentworthville in the west. For residents across this area looking for a local optometrist to book an eye health test, this guide explains what to look for, what the test involves, and how to access one within the Cumberland LGA.

Why Regular Eye Health Tests Matter

Many serious eye conditions develop slowly and without pain. Glaucoma, the leading cause of irreversible blindness in Australia, typically causes no symptoms until significant vision loss has already occurred. The same is true for early diabetic retinopathy and certain forms of macular degeneration. A regular eye health test is how these conditions are picked up before they become difficult or impossible to treat.

Beyond disease screening, a comprehensive eye test also checks your prescription, assesses binocular vision, and looks at the overall health of the eye structures from front to back. It is not just about whether you need glasses.

How Often Should Cumberland Residents Get Tested?

The right frequency depends on your age and health:

  • Children: First test around age three to four, then before starting school, then every one to two years through primary and high school. Children with myopia should be reviewed more frequently.
  • Adults aged 18 to 64: Every two years as a general guide, or more often if you wear glasses or contacts, have diabetes, or have a family history of glaucoma.
  • Adults aged 65 and over: Annually, as the risk of glaucoma, cataracts, and macular degeneration increases significantly with age.
  • Diabetics: At least once a year regardless of age. Diabetic retinopathy can develop and progress without any visible symptoms. Read: Eye Tests for Diabetics: How Often, and What Is Covered.

Is the Eye Test Free in Cumberland Council?

If you hold a valid Medicare card, your comprehensive eye health test is bulk billed at no cost to you at our clinic. Medicare covers the full consultation fee. You pay nothing out of pocket for the eye test itself.

It is worth knowing that bulk billing is a choice each practice makes individually. Not every optometrist in the Cumberland area bulk bills. Always confirm when booking whether there is a gap fee. At Prime Optometrists Auburn, all eligible Medicare card holders are bulk billed with no gap fee.

Note that bulk billing covers the eye test only. Glasses frames, lenses, and contact lenses are not covered by Medicare. These may be covered in part or in full by your private health fund optical extras. Read: Does Medicare Cover Glasses or Contact Lenses in Australia?
