An angle grinder spins its disc at up to 12,000 rpm. A fragment ejected from that disc travels at speeds comparable to a low-velocity projectile. When it strikes an unprotected eye, the result is often an intraocular foreign body,a fragment that has passed through the cornea and entered the interior of the eye itself.
The alarming part: many workers don't know this has happened. The initial sensation can be mild,a brief sting, slightly blurred vision, minor irritation. Only hours or days later, when vision deteriorates significantly, do they seek help. By then, surgical removal is often required.
Why High-Speed Fragments Are Different
A slow-moving particle landing on the eye surface causes a corneal abrasion or foreign body, painful, but manageable. A high-speed fragment has enough kinetic energy to pass through the cornea entirely. Because the wound self-seals due to the eye's intraocular pressure, there may be no obvious entry wound, and pain may be minimal.
This is called an open globe injury. It is a surgical emergency requiring ophthalmology. The difference between a surface foreign body and an open globe injury cannot always be determined without a slit lamp examination, which is why every significant eye injury from grinding or cutting work needs assessment, not observation at home.
Tools Most Likely to Cause Serious Injury
- Angle grinders: Metal disc failure is a known risk. Always use appropriate guard and face shield, not just safety glasses, for heavy grinding work
- Power saws (circular, reciprocating): Wood and metal chips travel in unpredictable directions
- Nail guns: Occasional ricochet produces high-speed fragments
- Wire brushing: Wire bristles break off and become embedded in the cornea
- Compressed air: Blowing debris loose can redirect particles directly toward the face
The Correct Standard of Protection
For grinding work, safety glasses alone are not sufficient. A full face shield rated for high-impact use should be worn over safety glasses. The face shield protects against large fragments and spatter; the safety glasses provide a backup layer if the shield fails or is flipped up.
