One of the most common questions from dry eye patients is whether they can continue wearing contact lenses. The answer is usually yes,but the type of lens, wearing schedule, and management approach all need to be tailored to the dry eye condition. Contact lens intolerance due to dry eye is one of the most common reasons patients discontinue lens wear, but with appropriate management, the majority can return to comfortable wear.

Daily Disposable Lenses

Daily disposable lenses are generally the best contact lens option for mild to moderate dry eye sufferers. Each day starts with a fresh, uncontaminated lens with its full water content and moisture coating intact. There is no accumulation of protein deposits, lipids, or environmental contamination that occurs in reusable lenses over time. The shorter wearing period also means less total ocular surface exposure to the lens material each day.

Silicone Hydrogel Lenses

Silicone hydrogel materials transmit significantly more oxygen to the cornea than conventional hydrogel lenses. High oxygen transmissibility (Dk/t) reduces hypoxia-related ocular surface inflammation, one contributor to contact lens-related dry eye. Many patients who find conventional hydrogel lenses uncomfortable tolerate silicone hydrogel versions well.

Scleral Lenses,For Severe Dry Eye

Scleral lenses are large-diameter rigid lenses that vault entirely over the cornea and rest on the less sensitive sclera (white of the eye). They are filled with preservative-free saline before insertion, creating a fluid reservoir between the lens and the corneal surface. This fluid environment keeps the cornea continuously hydrated regardless of tear production or quality, making scleral lenses transformative for patients with severe dry eye, keratoconus, or irregular corneal surfaces.

Hybrid Lenses

Hybrid lenses combine a rigid gas-permeable centre with a soft silicone hydrogel skirt. The rigid centre provides crisp optics; the soft skirt improves comfort compared to full scleral lenses. An option for some dry eye patients who cannot tolerate full scleral lenses.

Managing Dry Eye Alongside Contact Lens Wear

  • Use preservative-free artificial tears during wear
  • Manage the underlying dry eye condition with appropriate treatment
  • Reduce wearing time if symptoms persist late in the day
  • Avoid wearing lenses in high-dust or high-air-flow environments without protective eyewear
