Chemical eye splash first aid Auburn NSW

Chemical eye injuries are among the most time-critical emergencies in occupational eye health. Unlike a mechanical injury where the damage is immediate and then stops, chemical burns continue causing harm as long as the substance remains in contact with eye tissue. The first 30 seconds of response make a greater difference to outcome than any treatment that follows.

Step-by-Step First Aid for Chemical Eye Contact

  • 1. Irrigate immediately. Do not stop to find an eye wash station if a tap or hose is closer. Hold the eye open with your fingers if necessary and flush with the nearest clean water source. Begin within seconds.
  • 2. Remove contact lenses, after starting irrigation, not before. Remove them as quickly as possible to allow irrigation to reach the full ocular surface.
  • 3. Continue irrigating for 20–30 minutes minimum. For acid splashes, 20 minutes is generally sufficient. For alkali (concrete, cement, lime, bleach, oven cleaner), irrigate for at least 30 minutes or until you can confirm pH has normalised.
  • 4. Do not rub the eye, this spreads the chemical to areas that haven't been affected and can drive particles deeper.
  • 5. Call Prime Optometrists Auburn on (02) 9761 0005 for guidance on whether to present to us or proceed to Westmead Emergency.

Acids vs Alkalis,Why the Chemical Matters

Acid splashes (battery acid, pool chemicals, some cleaning products) tend to cause immediate coagulation of surface proteins, which limits how deep the damage goes. Still serious, but often manageable with prompt irrigation and outpatient treatment.

Alkali splashes (concrete, cement, lime, ammonia, bleach, drain cleaner, oven cleaner) penetrate deeply and cause ongoing tissue destruction. These are emergencies even after full irrigation and need urgent specialist assessment.

Common Workplace Chemicals That Cause Eye Injuries

  • Paint stripper and solvents (carpenters, painters)
  • Battery acid (mechanics, electricians)
  • Concrete and lime (concreters, bricklayers, plasterers)
  • Pool and industrial cleaning chemicals (facility maintenance workers)
  • Ammonia and caustic cleaning agents (food industry, commercial cleaning)
  • Spray-on adhesives and primers
