Back to School Eye Check: What the School Vision Screening Misses

Back to school eye check at Prime Optometrists Auburn NSW

As the new school year approaches, families across Auburn, Lidcombe, Parramatta and Western Sydney are thinking about uniforms, stationery, and lunchboxes. But one critical item is often missed: a proper eye test. Vision is responsible for approximately 80% of classroom learning, and a child who can't see clearly is at a significant disadvantage from day one.

What School Vision Screenings Actually Test

Most NSW public schools conduct brief vision screenings, typically a distance chart read from the front of the room. While this is better than nothing, it detects only one type of vision problem: moderate-to-severe distance blur (myopia). It misses:

  • Hyperopia (long-sightedness) — children can still read the chart but struggle with sustained near work
  • Astigmatism — causes blurring and distortion at all distances
  • Amblyopia (lazy eye) — only affects one eye; the “good” eye compensates and the child passes the test
  • Binocular vision problems — the eyes don't work efficiently together, causing fatigue and headaches during reading
  • Convergence insufficiency — a very common cause of reading difficulties that is invisible on a standard chart

Signs to Look for Before Term Starts

  • Avoiding reading or complaining books are “boring”
  • Losing their place when reading
  • Headaches or tired eyes by mid-afternoon
  • Holding books or tablets very close
  • One eye turning in or out, even slightly
  • Being slower than expected at reading for their year level

What a Full Optometrist Exam Covers

A comprehensive children's eye test at Prime Optometrists takes 30–45 minutes and checks everything the school screening does not: full binocular vision assessment, refraction for both eyes independently, ocular health, colour vision, and a review of any reading or learning concerns you raise.

It is bulk billed under Medicare for eligible children — no out-of-pocket cost. Bring your child's Medicare card and any existing glasses prescription. We are located at 43 Auburn Road, Auburn NSW 2144, easily accessible from Lidcombe, Berala, Granville, Parramatta, and Merrylands.
