Collecting a new pair of glasses, particularly a significantly changed prescription, or your first pair of progressive lenses, often comes with a period of visual adjustment that patients find unexpected and occasionally alarming. Things look the right size but subtly wrong. Steps seem higher or lower than expected. The floor looks curved. There is a persistent headache after wearing them for a few hours. These are normal adaptation responses in the vast majority of cases.
Why Vision Feels Strange with a New Prescription
When your prescription changes, the lenses alter the size, shape, and position of images on your retina. Your visual cortex, the part of the brain that processes vision, has been calibrated to interpret the image from your previous lens prescription. It needs time to recalibrate to the new input. This recalibration process typically takes 1–2 weeks, during which time the brain is actively adjusting its processing rather than simply accepting the new image as presented.
Factors that affect adaptation time:
- Size of prescription change, larger changes take longer
- First-time spectacle wearers may take longer than those updating a prescription
- Progressive (multifocal) lenses, the most significant adaptation challenge, typically 1–3 weeks
- New astigmatism correction or change in astigmatism axis, can cause noticeable spatial distortion initially
- Age,older patients generally adapt more slowly than younger patients
What Is Normal
- Mild distortion at the periphery of the visual field, particularly with astigmatism corrections
- Objects appearing slightly larger or smaller than with previous glasses
- Steps, kerbs, and floors appearing at slightly different heights than expected
- Headaches at the end of the day during the first few days
- A sense that vision is "not quite right" despite being technically sharp
When to Come Back
Contact us if: central vision is blurred (not just peripheral distortion), symptoms are worsening rather than improving after the first week, headaches are severe or constant, or you simply cannot wear the glasses comfortably after two full weeks of consistent use. In our experience, most adaptation issues resolve within 7–14 days of consistent wear. If they don't, a recheck is warranted.
