What Are FL-41 Glasses
Precision-filtered lenses, not sunglasses
FL-41 is a rose-amber tinted lens designed to filter the 480 to 520nm blue-green wavelength band. Clinical research has identified this specific range as the primary spectral region responsible for activating the light-sensitive pathways associated with migraine and photophobia.
A specialised population of retinal cells, intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells (ipRGCs), contain the photopigment melanopsin and are maximally sensitive to light in this wavelength range. In people who experience migraines, this pathway is believed to be sensitised, meaning that even ordinary levels of blue-green light from office fluorescent lights, screens, or natural daylight can trigger or intensify an attack.
FL-41 glasses are not sunglasses. Wearing very dark lenses indoors can paradoxically worsen photophobia over time by causing the visual system to further dark-adapt, lowering the threshold at which light causes pain. FL-41 works differently: it removes the specific triggering wavelength while allowing sufficient overall light for comfortable indoor vision.

480 to 520nm wavelength filtered. Not a generic blue-light lens.

Are FL-41 glasses covered by health insurance in NSW?
Prescription FL-41 glasses may attract a rebate through your optical extras on most major Australian health funds, including Medibank, Bupa, HCF, NIB, and HBF. The rebate amount depends on your specific level of optical cover. After dispatch, we email a full tax invoice that you can submit directly through your health fund app. You do not need to attend the clinic to claim.
What conditions may benefit from FL-41 glasses for Sydney patients?
FL-41 glasses are clinically studied for migraine and photophobia. Evidence suggests they may also benefit patients with chronic daily headache, post-concussion light sensitivity, and blepharospasm. Sydney patients working in offices with fluorescent lighting or spending long hours at screens may find FL-41 glasses particularly useful for reducing the blue-green light load that is associated with triggering migraine and light sensitivity symptoms.
How do FL-41 glasses differ from regular blue-light glasses available in Sydney optical shops?
FL-41 glasses filter the 480 to 520nm blue-green wavelength band, which clinical research has identified as the primary range activating the light-sensitive pathways involved in migraine. Standard blue-light glasses sold in most optical shops filter wavelengths below 450nm, targeting screen flicker and circadian disruption rather than migraine-related photophobia. FL-41 is a distinct, precision tint not available in most Sydney optical chains.
