What Are FL-41 Glasses
Spectral precision, not just tinted lenses
FL-41 is a rose-amber tinted lens engineered to filter the 480 to 520nm blue-green wavelength band. This specific spectral range is the primary activator of intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells (ipRGCs), a specialised population of retinal cells that contain melanopsin and project directly to pain-processing pathways in the brain associated with migraine-related photophobia.
Evidence from peer-reviewed clinical trials suggests that FL-41 lenses may help reduce migraine frequency and the severity of photophobia in susceptible individuals. The tint is clinically studied and distinct from standard blue-light glasses available in Perth optical stores, which target a different, lower wavelength range intended for screen-flicker and circadian effects.
FL-41 glasses are designed for indoor use. They are not sunglasses. Wearing dark tinted lenses indoors can paradoxically worsen light sensitivity over time by causing the visual system to dark-adapt, lowering the threshold at which normal light causes pain. FL-41 avoids this by removing the specific migraine-triggering wavelength while maintaining comfortable ambient indoor vision in Perth's fluorescent-lit workplaces, shopping centres, and clinical environments.

480 to 520nm wavelength filtered. Not sunglasses. Designed for indoor light environments.

FAQ
Perth and WA patient questions
Can Perth and Western Australia patients order FL-41 migraine glasses online?
Yes. Perth patients and those across Western Australia, including Fremantle, Joondalup, Mandurah, Rockingham, and regional WA, can order FL-41 migraine glasses online at primeoptometrists.com.au/shop. Orders are delivered free via Australia Post Standard. Prescription orders are reviewed by Dr Zobaida Tahiri, AHPRA-registered therapeutically endorsed optometrist, before dispatch.
How long does delivery to Perth take?
Glasses are typically ready within 1 to 5 business days from order. Australia Post Standard delivery from Auburn NSW to Perth metro takes approximately 3 to 6 business days. Regional Western Australia may take longer depending on location and whether the destination is a remote or very remote area. Express delivery is available at checkout.
Does Perth's intense sunlight and glare worsen migraines and light sensitivity?
Perth has some of the highest ambient UV and visible light intensities in Australia. For migraine and photophobia sufferers in Western Australia, this outdoor environment can be a major trigger. However, FL-41 glasses are designed for indoor use in fluorescent and screen environments, where the 480 to 520nm blue-green wavelength is concentrated. For outdoor use in Perth's bright conditions, a quality tinted sunglass lens is more appropriate. If your light sensitivity is primarily indoor-based, FL-41 is the appropriate tool. Your optometrist can help you determine which is right for your situation.
Are FL-41 glasses available with a prescription for Perth patients?
Yes. We offer FL-41 lenses in prescription (single vision, lens indices 1.50, 1.60, and 1.67) and non-prescription formats. Perth patients can enter their prescription securely at checkout or upload a photo of their current prescription card. All prescription orders are reviewed by Dr Zobaida Tahiri before dispatch to ensure accuracy.
Can Perth patients use their private health fund to claim FL-41 glasses?
Prescription FL-41 glasses may attract a rebate through optical extras on most major Australian health funds, including HBF, Medibank, Bupa, NIB, and CBHS. HBF is the most commonly held fund in Western Australia and generally covers optical extras on most of its plans. After dispatch, we email a full tax invoice suitable for health fund claims. Perth patients can submit this via their fund app without attending any clinic.
Is a bulk billed eye exam available for Perth patients?
Yes, if you travel to our Auburn NSW clinic in person. A comprehensive eye exam is bulk billed under Medicare for eligible cardholders with no out-of-pocket gap. If you are in Perth and would prefer not to travel, you can order online and have your prescription reviewed remotely by Dr Tahiri. If you have not had an eye examination recently, we recommend doing so with a local optometrist before ordering prescription glasses of any kind.
