What Are FL-41 Glasses

Targeted wavelength filtering, not dark lenses

FL-41 is a precision rose-amber tinted lens calibrated to filter the 480 to 520nm blue-green wavelength band. Clinical research has identified this spectral range as the primary activator of light-sensitive pain pathways involved in migraine. This is achieved through the lens filtering out the wavelengths that stimulate intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells (ipRGCs), a specialised population of retinal cells that drive the trigeminal pain pathway associated with migraine-related photophobia.

FL-41 is distinct from generic blue-light blocking glasses available in optical chain stores. Blue-light glasses filter wavelengths below 450nm and are intended for circadian and screen-flicker management. FL-41 targets the migraine-specific wavelength range with a different and more clinically targeted spectral profile.

FL-41 glasses are not sunglasses. They are designed for indoor use in fluorescent-lit offices, government buildings, hospitals, and screen environments typical of Canberra workplaces. Wearing very dark lenses indoors can worsen photophobia over time through dark adaptation. FL-41 avoids this by selectively removing the triggering wavelength without significantly reducing overall ambient light.

Why order from an Australian optometrist?

FL-41 glasses ordered through Prime Optometrists are dispensed under the clinical supervision of Dr Zobaida Tahiri, AHPRA-registered therapeutically endorsed optometrist, not shipped from an overseas warehouse without review.

FAQ

Canberra and ACT patient questions

Can Canberra and ACT patients order FL-41 migraine glasses online?

Yes. Canberra patients and those across the ACT, including Belconnen, Woden, Tuggeranong, Gungahlin, and Queanbeyan, can order FL-41 migraine glasses online at primeoptometrists.com.au/shop. Orders are delivered free via Australia Post Standard. Prescription orders are reviewed by Dr Zobaida Tahiri, AHPRA-registered therapeutically endorsed optometrist, before dispatch.

How long does delivery to Canberra take?

Glasses are typically ready within 1 to 5 business days from order. Australia Post Standard delivery from Auburn NSW to Canberra typically takes 2 to 3 business days. Queanbeyan and surrounding NSW postcodes bordering the ACT are generally within a similar timeframe. Express delivery is available at checkout if urgency is needed.

Are Canberra government employees covered by health fund optical extras for FL-41 glasses?

Many Canberra-based government employees hold membership with Medibank, Bupa, Defence Health, or similar funds. Prescription FL-41 glasses may attract a rebate through optical extras, depending on your level of cover. After dispatch, we email a full tax invoice suitable for health fund optical claims. You can submit this directly through your fund app without attending a clinic.

Do the harsh lighting conditions in Canberra office environments worsen migraines?

Fluorescent office lighting is one of the most common environmental triggers for migraine and photophobia. Many Canberra-based government and parliamentary workers report that fluorescent open-plan offices exacerbate their light sensitivity. FL-41 glasses are designed specifically for indoor fluorescent and screen-heavy environments and may help reduce the blue-green wavelength load that is associated with triggering migraine attacks in these settings.

Is a comprehensive eye exam available for Canberra patients?

Yes. If you travel to our Auburn NSW clinic for an in-person consultation, a comprehensive eye exam is bulk billed under Medicare for eligible cardholders. Canberra is approximately a 3-hour drive from Auburn, or a short flight from Canberra Airport to Sydney followed by a train. If travelling, it is worth calling ahead on (02) 9761 0005 so we can reserve appropriate appointment time.

Can I get FL-41 glasses in non-prescription format if I have perfect vision?

Yes. Non-prescription FL-41 glasses are available in our online shop. If you do not need a refractive correction but suffer from migraine-related photophobia, non-prescription FL-41 lenses can be fitted in any of our available frames and delivered to Canberra with free standard delivery. Frames from $249.
