The Problem
Why so many Australians are looking for migraine glasses
Migraine affects roughly 4.9 million Australians, and light sensitivity, or photophobia, is one of the most disabling features of an attack. For many people, the problem extends beyond individual migraines. Between attacks, the visual system remains more reactive to light than usual, making everyday environments, offices, screens, shopping centres, and outdoor settings genuinely difficult to manage.
Standard sunglasses worn indoors can make this worse over time. When the eyes are kept in a perpetually dark environment, they become more sensitive through dark adaptation. What is needed is a lens that targets the specific wavelengths responsible for triggering discomfort, rather than blocking all light indiscriminately.
That is exactly what FL-41 tinted lenses were developed to do. And in Australia, access to them through a professional optometrist, rather than a generic marketplace, makes a meaningful difference to outcomes.
The Science
What are FL-41 migraine glasses?
FL-41 is a specific rose-amber tint originally developed through clinical research in the United Kingdom. It is not a marketing colour or a generic tint. It is a precision spectral filter with a defined clinical purpose.
The targeted wavelength
FL-41 lenses are designed to filter the 480 to 520nm range of the visible light spectrum. This blue-green band is specifically associated with activating the intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells (ipRGCs) that are linked to pain signalling in migraine.
Peer-reviewed research
Clinical studies including research published in the journal Cephalalgia found that FL-41 tinted lenses were associated with a significant reduction in migraine frequency compared to a grey control tint. Results vary between individuals and FL-41 glasses are not a cure for migraine.
Clinical oversight included
Unlike marketplace purchases, every prescription order at Prime Optometrists is reviewed by Dr Zobaida Tahiri, a therapeutically endorsed AHPRA-registered optometrist, before the glasses are dispensed. Your vision correction and lens prescription are verified before dispatch.

Clinical note
FL-41 lenses are different to blue-light blocking glasses sold in pharmacies and electronics stores.
Generic blue-light lenses target a broad range for screen comfort. FL-41 is a specific clinical tint calibrated to the wavelength range most associated with migraine photosensitivity.
Who These Are For
Who may benefit from migraine glasses?
FL-41 migraine glasses may be suitable for a range of conditions involving light sensitivity and visual discomfort. Results vary between individuals.
Migraine with light sensitivity
People with episodic or chronic migraine who find that light is a consistent trigger or that indoor environments are difficult to manage between attacks.
Screen and office workers
Those who spend extended hours under fluorescent lighting or in front of screens and find that their work environment consistently contributes to headaches.
Post-concussion light sensitivity
Individuals experiencing persistent light sensitivity following a concussion or traumatic brain injury, where photophobia is a recognised post-concussion symptom.
Blepharospasm
People with benign essential blepharospasm, where light-induced reflex blinking and eye-closing is aggravated by specific wavelengths of light. FL-41 is clinically studied in this condition.
Vestibular migraine
Those experiencing dizziness, imbalance, and visual discomfort associated with vestibular migraine, where visual environments can be particularly challenging.
General photophobia
Individuals with ongoing sensitivity to light from any cause who find that indoor or outdoor lighting consistently causes discomfort, squinting, or headache.

Clinical Oversight
Why choosing the right provider matters
A search for migraine glasses online returns hundreds of results, from marketplaces to pharmacies to overseas retailers. Many of these options sell tinted glasses labelled as FL-41 without any clinical framework around them.
The problem is not simply one of quality, though tint consistency between unregulated suppliers does vary. The more significant issue is the absence of professional oversight. When you receive prescription glasses without an optometrist reviewing the order, errors in the prescription, the lens index, or the centration of the lenses can go undetected.
In Australia, dispensing prescription spectacles is a regulated activity. At Prime Optometrists, every prescription order is reviewed by Dr Zobaida Tahiri before it leaves our clinic. That review is not a formality. It is the same clinical check that would apply if you collected your glasses in person.
For non-prescription orders, the same FL-41 clinical-grade tint is used, and you receive the same professional product guidance from an Australian optometry practice, not an algorithm.

Why Us
Why order from Prime Optometrists?
We are an Australian optometry practice, not a warehouse or a dropshipper. Here is what that means for your order.
Personal optometrist review
Dr Zobaida Tahiri personally reviews every prescription order before it is dispensed. Your prescription, lens index, and centration are checked by a registered professional, not an automated process.
AHPRA-registered practice
Prime Optometrists is an Australian-registered optometry practice. Dr Zobaida Tahiri is therapeutically endorsed, meaning she is qualified to manage complex eye and vision conditions beyond routine eye care.
Clinical-grade FL-41 tint
We use a consistent, clinical-grade FL-41 tint in all our migraine glasses. The tint formulation is the same for every lens, so the spectral filtering effect is predictable and reliable.
Prescription and non-prescription
Both formats are available. Prescription lenses combine your vision correction with the FL-41 tint. Non-prescription lenses include the tint only, ideal for those without a refractive correction.
Frame Finder Quiz
Not sure which frame suits you? Our Frame Finder Quiz asks four short questions about your face shape, style preferences, and how you will wear the glasses, then recommends the best options from our range.
100+ five-star Google reviews
Over 100 verified five-star reviews from patients across Australia. Migraine management, light sensitivity, and our clinical approach are among the most commonly mentioned themes in patient feedback.
The Process
How each order is clinically reviewed
Ordering migraine glasses from Prime Optometrists is not the same as buying from a general retailer. Here is what happens behind the scenes from the moment you place your order.
You place your order online
Select your frame, colour, and lens type. If you have a prescription, upload it directly in the ordering process or enter your details manually. Choose your lens index based on your prescription strength.
Prescription verification
Dr Zobaida Tahiri reviews your uploaded prescription for accuracy, checks the lens index is appropriate for your prescription strength, and confirms the centration details before any lens is cut.
Lens cutting and quality check
Your FL-41 clinical-grade tinted lenses are cut to the frame and your prescription in our lab. A final quality check is performed before the glasses are packaged.
Dispatch and delivery
Your glasses are carefully packaged and dispatched via Australia Post. Standard delivery reaches most Australian addresses within 1 to 5 business days. A tracking number is provided.
Follow-up support
If you have any questions after receiving your glasses, our team is available by phone at (02) 9761 0005 or you can visit our Auburn clinic in person.

Dr Zobaida Tahiri

PD measurement guidance
Your pupillary distance (PD) is needed for prescription lenses. It is the distance in millimetres between the centres of your pupils and determines where the optical centre of each lens sits in front of your eyes.
If your PD is not on your prescription, our ordering process includes a camera-based measurement tool that guides you through the measurement using your device camera. Alternatively, a home measurement using a ruler and mirror is also supported with step-by-step instructions.

Frame selection assistance
Choosing the right frame is straightforward with the right guidance. Our online shop includes a Frame Finder Quiz that asks about your face shape, style preferences, and intended use, then recommends the best options from our range.
All frames in our range are available with FL-41 clinical-grade tints. Each frame page includes measurements, materials, and face shape guidance. You can also view frame photos from the front and at an angle before ordering.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
What are migraine glasses and how do they work?
Migraine glasses are spectacles fitted with a precision-tinted lens designed to filter specific wavelengths of light associated with triggering migraines and photophobia. The most clinically studied tint is FL-41, a rose-amber filter targeting the 480 to 520nm blue-green range. This wavelength is known to activate light-sensitive pathways that are hyperreactive in people with migraine. By reducing this specific light load, FL-41 glasses may help reduce the frequency of light-triggered migraine episodes and are distinct from generic blue-light glasses or standard tinted sunglasses.
Do I need a prescription to order migraine glasses?
No. Prime Optometrists offers FL-41 migraine glasses in both prescription and non-prescription formats. Non-prescription lenses include the same clinical-grade FL-41 tint with no vision correction. If you have a prescription, we can fit FL-41 lenses to your current correction so your migraine glasses also keep your vision clear.
Can I order migraine glasses online anywhere in Australia?
Yes. We ship FL-41 migraine glasses to all states and territories, including NSW, VIC, QLD, WA, SA, TAS, ACT, and NT. You can complete the entire order online, including uploading your prescription if required. Every prescription order is personally reviewed by Dr Zobaida Tahiri before dispatch.
How long does delivery take across Australia?
Orders are typically processed and dispatched within 1 to 5 business days once the prescription is verified. Standard Australia Post delivery then takes 1 to 5 further business days depending on your location. Express delivery is available at checkout.
How is ordering from Prime Optometrists different from buying on Amazon or eBay?
Generic migraine glasses sold on marketplaces are made without clinical oversight, use inconsistent tint formulations, and are not dispensed by a registered optometrist. At Prime Optometrists, every prescription order is personally reviewed by Dr Zobaida Tahiri, a therapeutically endorsed AHPRA-registered optometrist, before it is dispensed. We use consistent clinical-grade FL-41 tints and provide professional guidance. This clinical layer of oversight is not available through generic online retailers.
Will my health fund cover migraine glasses in Australia?
FL-41 migraine glasses with a prescription may be eligible for a health fund benefit under optical extras, depending on your insurer and level of cover. Non-prescription versions are generally not covered under optical benefits. We recommend checking with your health fund prior to ordering. A receipt will be provided with your order for any claim.
How do I measure my PD (pupillary distance) for online ordering?
Your pupillary distance (PD) is the measurement in millimetres between the centres of your pupils. It is sometimes included on your glasses prescription. If not, you can measure at home using a ruler and mirror following our online guide, or use the camera-based PD measurement tool built into our ordering process. Our team can also assist by phone or email.
How do I choose the right frame for migraine glasses?
Frame choice follows the same principles as regular glasses selection: consider your face shape, personal style, and where you will wear them most. Our online shop includes a Frame Finder Quiz that asks four short questions and recommends frames suited to your face shape and preferences. All frames are available with FL-41 clinical-grade tints. You are also welcome to call our Auburn clinic for guidance.
