When should I go to hospital instead?
Go directly to Auburn Hospital emergency if you have a high-velocity impact (nail gun, compressed air), visible wound on the eye, sudden vision loss, or fluid leaking from the eye.
What is a rust ring and why does it matter?
When iron or steel embeds in the cornea it oxidises within hours, depositing iron oxide into surrounding tissue. This rust ring must be removed separately using a corneal burr. Same-day treatment avoids rust ring formation.
