About this service
Children's Glasses
Choosing the right glasses for a child involves more than finding a frame they will actually wear. Children's lenses should be made from polycarbonate or Trivex, materials that are significantly more impact-resistant than standard plastic or glass. Frames need to fit correctly so the optical centres align with the pupils, otherwise the prescription will not work as intended. At Prime Optometrists Auburn, we stock a range of children's frames chosen for durability, fit, and appropriate lens compatibility.

Common questions
Frequently asked questions
What lens material is best for children?
Polycarbonate is the standard recommendation for children. It is approximately 10 times more impact-resistant than standard plastic, lighter, and includes inherent UV protection. Trivex is an alternative with slightly better optical clarity for high prescriptions.
At what age can a child get glasses?
Children can be prescribed glasses at any age, including infancy. Early correction of significant prescriptions is important to prevent amblyopia (lazy eye) from developing.
Are children's glasses covered by Medicare or health funds?
The eye test is bulk billed under Medicare. The glasses themselves may be partially or fully covered by private health fund optical extras. We process claims on the spot via HICAPS.
How often do children need their prescription updated?
Children's prescriptions can change significantly within 12 months, particularly during primary school years. Annual eye tests are recommended for school-age children.
